Step 1: What do I sell? How do I sell?

First, choose which of these three approaches to pursue, and understand where e-commerce varies.

  • E-Commerce refers to the broad category of buying and selling goods or services online. Traditionally, this involves purchasing inventory in advance, storing it, and then shipping it to customers. 


  • Dropshipping, on the other hand, is a specific method of operating an e-commerce store where the seller does not keep any inventory. Instead, when a customer makes a purchase, you buy the item from a third-party supplier who ships it directly to the customer. 


  • Recommerce, short for Reverse Commerce, involves selling previously owned, used, or liquidated goods. This approach emphasizes giving products a second life through refurbishing, reselling, or recycling. 

Step 2: How Do I Source products I sell?

When it comes to e-commerce that utilizes your own inventory, there are three methods for sourcing.

  • Global Bulk refers to the Manufacturer model, where you purchase large quantities directly from factories, typically located in Asia, to achieve the lowest possible price per unit. This method is ideal for private labeling, which involves branding a product with your own label, and maximizing profit margins. However, it requires significant upfront capital and may involve longer shipping times. 

 

  • Boutique represents the Independent model, where you acquire smaller batches of unique, high-quality goods from independent makers and artisans. Some platforms may offer a buy now, pay later option, which can be beneficial for cash flow. This approach is best suited for building a premium, story-driven brand, where customers are willing to pay more for quality and uniqueness. 

 

  • Liquidation is known as the Value model. In this case, you purchase bulk pallets of overstock or customer returns from liquidation platforms that often collaborate with retail giants like Amazon and Walmart, at a fraction of the original cost. This model presents a high-profit treasure hunt, where you might acquire items at prices up to 90% lower than retail. It is particularly effective for high-margin reselling on specific recommerce marketplaces. 

Step 3: Where Do I source products i sell?

B2B Marketplaces, B2B Liquidation Auction Marketplaces, and Dropshipping Platforms.

  •  B2B (Business-to-Business) Marketplaces act as large online platforms that connect you directly with manufacturers and wholesalers.  For an e-commerce seller, they serve as a central hub for your supply chain. You buy new products in bulk, often with your own branding, and either keep them yourself or at a nearby warehouse, or ideally, have them sent to a fulfillment center you work with.  Instead of going to trade shows, you can even use AI-powered search and image recognition to find products. B2B marketplaces also function as an escrow service to protect your money. The platform holds your payment, and the supplier only gets paid after you confirm that the products have arrived and met your quality standards.  With just one click, you can have the marketplace handle shipping, customs, and insurance, giving you a tracking number like that of a regular consumer package. 


  •  B2B Liquidation Auction Marketplaces serve as platforms for bidding on pallets containing overstock or customer returns from prominent retailers, enabling you to buy well-known brands at discounts reaching as high as 90% off retail prices. These marketplaces function much like a stock exchange for second-hand goods. They allow e-commerce merchants to bypass intermediaries and obtain bulk inventory directly. 


  •  Dropshipping Platforms are service providers that allow you to showcase products on your online store without needing to buy them in advance.  When a customer places an order with you, the supplier from the platform ships the item directly to them. A Dropshipping Platform serves as the link between your online shop and a worldwide network of warehouses, transforming you from a manual worker into a digital orchestrator.  Think of the platform as your automated logistics department. When you find a product on a dropshipping platform, you just click a button, and the AI can even create the listing on your e-store, including photos, descriptions, and weight details.
