Private Label is the general name given to the type of product contents developed by you manufactured by a third-party manufacturer or a contract, and sold under your brand name. It is called a private label product. As the private label owner, you specify everything about the product to the manufacturer, such as what goes in it, how it is packaged, what the label looks like, and of course what the brand name is. One should not confuse private label with white label. While white label is only about picking your own brand name and specifying the label, private label comes with more comprehensive involvement of yours in the process of production.
White Label is the general name given to the type of product sold under your brand name, however the contents of the product developed and manufactured by a third-party manufacturer. White Label differs from Private Label, because at a white label product you only specify what the label looks like. The third-party manufacturer you are going to be fulfilling your white label orders is already an expert in manufacturing the product you want; they produce the same product under other brand names. The manufacturer specifies what goes in it and how it’s packaged, in other words the manufacturer takes care of all components of the production other than the brand name you specified that appears on the label.
As an online retailer you sell products unique to your brand and/or store. It is best you obtain unique barcodes for each one of your products. There are sellers who do not have barcodes associated with their products they sell, but it is important to know that products with no barcodes have almost no chance finding place at major ecommerce marketplaces. The other way for obtaining barcodes for your products is reaching out to certain platforms in order purchase barcodes at second hand market. This pathway is preferred by those whose priority is cost-effective approach. There are various platforms where previously used UPCs are being sold. However, if the quantity of barcodes you will purchase is not really high, such as in hundreds or thousands, then it is best taking care of business at GS1.
